Our Regenerative Farming Practices

At The Green Rebel, we are committed to transforming 15 hectares of degraded land in Spain into a thriving regenerative agroforestry farm. Our mission is to combat climate change, improve biodiversity, and enrich soil quality while producing high-quality organic food. Central to our approach are two innovative farming methods: Syntropic Farming and No-Dig Market Gardening.

Syntropic Farming: Mimicking Nature's Wisdom

Syntropic farming is an agroforestry system developed by Ernst Götsch in Brazil, inspired by the natural processes of forest ecosystems. This method focuses on creating systems that produce food without harming the land’s soil systems. It involves planting trees, shrubs, crops, and ground cover densely together, mimicking a natural forest. By doing so, we promote healthy soil and biodiversity, resulting in better and mostly more nutrient-dense harvests.

Key principles of Syntropic Farming include:

  • Multi-Strata Planting: Combining trees, shrubs, and ground cover to mimic natural forest layers.

  • Pruning: By pruning support species around cash crops, the soil is fertilized through growth hormones
  • Accelerated Succession: Managing plant growth to replicate natural forest succession, enhancing soil fertility and biodiversity.

  • Nutrient Cycling: Utilizing plant residues and organic matter to replenish soil nutrients naturally.

  • Water Management: Implementing techniques to improve water retention and distribution across the farm.

By adopting these practices, we aim to restore ecological balance and create a resilient farming system that benefits both the environment and our community. So far we have planted over 10,000 trees and bushes with the principles of Syntropic Farming.

No-Dig Market Gardening: Cultivating with Care

No-Dig Market Gardening is a regenerative farming method that avoids disturbing the soil structure. Instead of tilling, we apply organic matter like compost directly onto the soil surface, allowing nature to enrich the soil through natural processes.

Benefits of No-Dig Market Gardening include:

  • Soil Health Preservation: Maintaining soil structure and promoting beneficial organisms.

  • Weed Suppression: Using organic mulches to prevent weed growth naturally.

  • Water Conservation: Enhancing soil's ability to retain moisture, reducing the need for irrigation.

  • Increased Biodiversity: Supporting a diverse ecosystem of plants and beneficial insects.

This method aligns with our commitment to agroecology and ensures that our produce is grown in harmony with nature.
